In the finals of the district baseball tournament, hosted by Millington, Vassar collected their second straight district championship, beating Reese 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
After falling behind 4-1 early, Vassar charged back against the Rockets to score three runs in the sixth inning and tie the game at 4-4 heading into the last inning. After holding the Rockets scoreless in the top half of the final inning, the Vulcans were given an opportunity to win the title with just one run. With two outs and senior Addison Hansard on second base, junior Ethan Dunham laced a ball down the first base line. The ball hopped over the first baseman’s glove and into the outfield deep enough to allow Hansard to score and clinch the district title for the Vassar Vulcans.
Max Kukulski got the start on the mound for the Vulcans and allowed two earned runs on eight hits. Jacob Preston came on in relief once again due to pitch count during the sixth inning and collected the final two outs and the win.
The Vassar offense was paced by Addison Hansard and Ethan Dunham who each collected two hits in the contest. Kukulski and Dunham each had two RBIs in route to winning the title.
Vassar’s overall record now sits at 15-14-2 as they advance to the regional round of the postseason. Vassar will continue their postseason run in Chesaning on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Vulcans will face Saginaw Valley Lutheran, who they last met and beat in the district championship last season by a score of 8-7.
