After a game one victory against Reese, Vassar faced off against host, Valley Lutheran, in the district championship game Saturday afternoon.
After two quiet innings, the Vulcans’ bats came alive in the third inning, scoring eight runs and jumping out to an 8-0 lead. However, after Steven Hecht exited the game with two outs in the fourth, Valley Lutheran was able to fight their way back into the game, scoring five runs in the fifth and cutting the Vassar lead to three. Max Kukulski was able to keep the lead at three heading into the final inning, but Valley Lutheran cut the deficit to one run with two outs in the seventh inning when Kukulski met his pitch limit. With runners on first and third with two outs, senior Abraham Cerda came in and struck out the final batter, clinching the 8-7 victory and district championship for the Vulcans.
In the game, Collin Bowden and Kukulski each collected multiple hits offensively. Steven Hecht collected the win on the mound for the Vulcans.
The Vulcans’ overall record now sits at 26-7, tying them for the school wins record in a single season. Vassar will now travel to Millington on Saturday to play their first-round regional matchup against St. Charles at 12:00 p.m.
